In preventing tooth decay formation fluorides are administered, and that is either systemically (Zymafluor) or locally (Elmex gelee). In case of local application the fluorides get into the outer layer of the hard dental enamel where they cumulate. The prevent dissolving of the enamel and suppress or inhibit metabolism of microorganisms in dental plaque. Thus they prevent tooth decay formation or they slow its development.
